Salman Rushdie’s 1988 book The Satanic Verses was rewarded by a world wide fatwah issued by Ayatollah Ruholiah Khomeini. It was a death sentence that resulted in a failed assasination plot, book burnings, and riots that resulted in the deaths of many people

(from Wikipedia). He arrived on the stage of Ruby Diamond Auditorium (RDA), on the campus of FSU, prior to a speech, without any security which greatly surprised me. The fatwah has yet to be fully rescinded and there are some who vow to carry it out.
